55 to 75 Days to maturity. Cucumis sativus var. tsuyataro. Tsuyataro Cucumber Hybrid Seeds. Warm-season annual hybrid. Non-GMO. This outstanding, easy-to-grow, burpless type is popular in Japan. The skin is glossy green and smooth with a few spines. The fruit is very uniform and suitable for growing in an open field, greenhouse, as well as the home garden setting. Tsuyataro is a favorite of any gardener who has attempted to grow it before. Approximately 1,100 seeds per oz.
Other Common Names: Huang gua, huang kwa, ketimun, khira, kyuri, pepino, pipingha, taeng kwa, timun or Japanese Cucumber.
How to Grow Tsuyataro Cucumber
Plant seeds in the late spring or early summer after the last frost in a warm, sunny location. To get a head start, sow indoors 2-3 weeks prior to the last frost and transplant when the weather no longer threatens to frost. Fertilize as needed, especially when they begin to bear fruit. Training it to climb a vertical support such as a trellis promotes better air circulation, more attractive fruits, and an easy harvest. Allow the soil to lightly dry between waterings preventing water-attracted pests and diseases. It has a monecious flowering habit (the plant produces both male and female flowers).
Harvesting Tsuyataro Cucumber
Harvest when the fruit is no more than 9 inches long, mostly green, and firm. Detach the cucumbers at the base of the stem. Avoid delaying the harvest to when the cucumbers are longer than 9 inches as the seeds will start to develop and may overcome the delicious flesh.
Snacking on these fresh is a must-try! They are also great for traditional sunomono. The mild flavor makes them perfect for pairing with any other food that needs a fresh crunch!
Tips From Our Gardeners
“I would recommend this variety for the first-time Japanese cucumber growers and seasoned alike. Don’t be concerned if the older leaves begin to yellow, this is natural!”
