55-75 Days to maturity. Cucumis sativus var. tokiwa. Tokiwa Cucumber Seeds. Warm-season annual heirloom. Non-GMO. This uniform, dark green variety grows 1.5" in diameter and 9-10" long. Although the fruit does have some spines, it is one of the few varieties which retains great flavor and texture even when grown large. Originally from China, Tokiwa became extremely popular in Tokyo during the 1930s for its long vines and has maintained its positive reputation for trellis climbing and fruit production ever since. How to Grow Tokiwa Cucumber
Sow seeds in the late spring or early summer after the last frost in a warm, sunny location. Or, seed indoors 2 to 3 weeks in anticipation of the last frost and transplant them outdoors when the last frost date has passed. Fertilize periodically throughout the fruit-bearing season to promote higher yields. This variety is particularly well suited for trellis or fence climbing; Doing so will improve air circulation as well as overall plant health. It will be followed by an easy and abundant harvest. This is an open-pollinated plant, so pollinators like bees and butterflies will be your best friend!
Harvesting Tokiwa Cucumber
Harvest when the fruit is at least 8 inches long, very green, and firm. These are commonly harvested when they reach 9-10 inches long.
Culinary Tips
Tokiwa cucumbers are exceptional at enhancing any salad. Pickling (tsukemono) into tasty little snacks is also recommended! Their texture is often described as buttery soft making them delightful for slicing.
