Growing Calypso F1 Hybrid Cucumbers in the Vegetable Garden
Cucumbers are best directly sown as their roots are sensitive to transplanting. However, they can be started indoors 3-4 weeks before transplanting for an early start. Keep in mind that cucumbers require warm soil and air temperatures. Seeds germinate in 6-10 days at 75-85 F. Sow 1 inch deep and 18 inches apart, with rows 48 inches apart. Grow in full sun with fertile, well-draining soil. Covering your young seedlings with a floating row cover can help protect them from cucumber beetles. Be sure to remove it once they start flowering. The calypso F1 hybrid is gynoecious, meaning it produces primarily female flowers and produces high yields. To provide a pollen source, we recommend growing a monoecious variety nearby (male and female flowers).
Harvesting Calypso Hybrid Cucumber
Calypso F1 hybrid cucumbers grow to about 3 inches long and 1 inch in diameter. It is best to check the plant daily once fruit begins to form. Harvest frequently to encourage continued fruit production. This variety is known as a high-yielder due to its gynoecious nature. The fruits should be medium green with small white spines.
