Growing Non-GMO Organic Painted Hills Corn Seeds
Corn should be directly sown in blocks or clumps to encourage good pollination via wind. Clear your growing area of weeds before planting. A loamy, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-6.8 is best. Sow corn seeds 1-2 inches deep and 3-4 inches apart after your last spring frost date. When true leaves start developing, thin the seedlings to one every 12 inches. Rows should be spaced 24 inches apart.
Corn is a heavy feeder and can benefit from a side dressing of a balanced fertilizer when the stalks reach knee height. Provide consistent moisture throughout the growing season, especially during the tassling and silking stages. Scout for signs of pests or disease to take early action. Common signs of pest presence include bite marks, holes, and chewing damage. Borers will often target the stalks, which leads to falling over. Signs of disease or nutrient deficiency include discolored leaves or unusual spotting. Remove affected leaves to improve the overall health of the plant.
Harvesting Painted Hills Corn
Painted Hills Corn may be harvested for fresh eating when the kernels are white to lightly colored. For fresh eating, harvest when the kernels pop with some liquid when squeezed while the ears feel full and firm to the touch. For more of an ornamental look allow the ears to fully mature and dry. Throughout this process, the colored kernels will intensify in color for a more attractive decorative look.
Painted Hills Corn in the Vegetable Garden
Corn is a staple in the home vegetable garden, but many growers find it hard to grow quality corn amid regions with short growing seasons and cool spring temperatures. This variety was developed to aid these growers. With an early maturity, tolerance of cool and wet soils, and an open-pollinated background, it is sure to perform well where other heat-loving varieties would fall short. For those seeking to create an edible landscape we recommend utilizing corn by growing it in clumps for an attractive grassy look often filled by tall ornamental grasses.
About Painted Hills Corn Garden Seeds
Painted Hills corn is a cross between ‘Painted Mountain’ flour corn and ‘Luther Hill’ sweet corn. This cross creates a unique, colorful appearance while retaining the sweet old-time corn flavor for fresh eating.
Painted Hills corn was developed by Alan Kapuler based out of Oregon, USA. He is known for his commitment to developing open-pollinated varieties with organic growing practices.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"I believe corn is highly underutilized in edible landscape designs. While corn requires a community for pollination purposes, this can easily be accommodated by planting it in clumps of at least 4 plants in diameter. If you love tall ornamental grasses such as Karl Forester or Elephant grass, consider giving corn a try."
