How to Grow Osaka Shirona Cabbage
It is best to grow the Osaka Shirona loose-head Chinese Cabbage by seed, however, loose-head varieties can handle transplant stress better than headed varieties. Start sowing as soon as the soil is workable and soil temperatures stay above 50 F. In frost-free areas, you can grow Osaka Shirona year-round. In areas prone to high heat use shade covers to prevent bolting during the summer.
Harvesting Chinese Cabbage
To harvest Chinese Cabbage cut just above the soil surface. If you are wanting to use this plant as a cut and come again crop make your harvesting cut a bit higher as this will encourage new head development. To use as tender greens make your harvest earlier in the season.
Culinary Tips
As Osaka Shirona is a tender, loose-leaf variety you can use it in a mix of greens or cook it with dishes calling for Chinese Cabbage. You can pickle loose-leaf varieties however they are not ideal for storage. It is popular in Japanese soups and is often braised with meat in sukiyaki. Use in yosenabe, ohitashi, stir-fry, pickling and salad.
