Growing Non-GMO Plumed Celosia Castle Series Flower Seeds
Plumed Celosia seeds can be directly sown or started indoors for earlier blooms. If planting indoors, start 6-8 weeks before the last frost date and harden off the seedlings after they have at least two true leaves to avoid shock. Plant seeds 0.25 inches deep and keep the soil moist but not saturated.
This variety of celosia usually does not require staking. The flowers can last up to a month, but then require deadheading to bloom again. They brown from the bottom to the top; when the bottom third of the flower is brown, snip it off at the base of the flower stalk. Celosia plants of all kinds are extremely sensitive to cold temperatures and will die at first exposure to frost. To extend the life of the flowers a few extra weeks, transfer them to pots and bring them inside before the first frost of winter. Once the blooms die, they should be tossed as they don’t do well with overwintering.
Castle Series Plumed Celosias in the Flower Garden
Plumed Celosias are commonly used mixed into a flower bed of colorful annuals. We also recommend the striking and dramatic look of a mass planting. Not only do these pair well with more traditional bedding plants such as petunias and violas, but interplanting different types of celosia creates an intricate masterpiece of visual interest! Celosia is also a great selection for container gardens.
Harvesting Castle Series Plumed Celosias
This variety is popular for enjoying dried celosia blooms. To dry them, harvest the mature blooms when they are at peak beauty. Keep the stems as long as possible and keep them in water for only a short amount of time to retain the vigor until processing. Bundle four to eight stems together and hang upside down in a warm, dry location. Protect them from direct sunlight and space the bundles apart to encourage airflow and even drying.
About Castle Series Plumed Celosia Garden Seeds
Celosia plants do very well in pots and containers. One plant requires a 6-8-inch pot. Potted arrangements of celosias often feature colorful heuchera foliage and tall grasses for height.
Plumed Celosias also attract many pollinators like bees! Plant a few near your vegetable garden to get the pollen circulating.
Celosia is a member of the Amaranth family. This variety has similarly shaped blooms but with incredibly bright colors that look like fire!
Expect these dense and vibrant blooms to be around from early summer all the way to the first frost.
Dried celosia blooms look fantastic in fall table arrangements for everyday or special occasions like Thanksgiving.
Stories From Our Gardeners
"Anyone’s first time noticing a celosia plant is quite comical. They can look alien, from a Dr. Seuss book, or just plain weird. No matter what, they are captivating and desirable."
