Growing Cancan Scarlet Carnation (Treated) Garden Seeds

Cancan Scarlet carnation seeds can take several months to mature and are most commonly started indoors 12-14 weeks prior to the final frost. Seeds will germinate in 7-14 days in complete darkness. When transplanting, harden off to a sunny place in the garden or a window indoors. Lightly press 2-3 Cancan Scarlet carnation seeds in the soil 9" apart in Organically rich, loamy, evenly moist, and well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Cancan Scarlet carnation seeds require full sun for robust flowering while preferring cool summers. Plants will benefit from partial shade in the long summer months and should be properly ventilated and not overwatered, as plants may be susceptible rust and crown rot. Deadheading will promote blooming well into the season, although can be laborious. Carnations have no known serious pests. Cancan Scarlet carnation seeds mature in 154-175 days as 12-15 inch tall bushy uprights with a 9-12 inch spread of dense 2 inch loosely-tufted, fully doubled blooms.

Cancan Scarlet carnation debuted as a 2003 All-American Selections Flower Winner and noted by AAS judges for its "spicy fragrance", "heat tolerance", and "producing flowers throughout the growing season into the fall." Dianthus caryophyllus, or more commonly known as the carnation, has a long history of cultivation for profit and ornamentation for the last 2,000 years throughout the world, so much so that its origin is difficult to trace, but botanists believe the carnation could be native to the Mediterranean region. The carnation is a symbolically significant ornamental flower and a staple during Mother's Day and May Day.
