Growing Earliblue Blueberry Roots

Plant in early spring in full sun and acidic soil (pH 4.5-5.5). Acidic soil conditions are important for blueberry plants to thrive. If needed, adjust the pH of your soil by adding elemental sulphur each year. Other successful methods include using a fertigation system to maintain the desired soil pH range. This is most commonly needed in Western regions. Areas such as the Pacific Northwest and Eastern states typically have naturally acidic soil conditions.

Space plants 4-5 feet apart in rows 6-10 feet apart. Transplant into a full sun location that is protected from strong winds. Dig a hole that is twice as wide and equally deep as the root ball. Gently loosen the soil around the roots to help the roots spread. Keep soil consistently moist, especially during early establishment. Mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Blueberries are somewhat self-sterile. This means that it is best to grow two different varieties near each other for cross-pollination and better fruit set.

Berries ripen in early summer, typically June to July. Harvest when fully blue and easily detach from the plant. Pick regularly to encourage more fruit ripening. It takes several years for blueberry plants to become established and start producing fully. Wait 2-3 years to start gathering a full harvest. It can take up to 6 years for your blueberry bushes to reach peak production.
