How to Grow Yellow Bai Bu Lao Pole Beans
Sow seeds in the late spring or early summer after the last frost in a warm, sunny location. Optionally, use a legume root inoculant for faster growth. The soil should be moist in the early days. However, cold, wet soil will cause the seeds to rot before germination. As the plants become established, allow the soil to dry lightly between deep waterings. If the plants look pale throughout the season, boost them with a low-nitrogen fertilizer.
Save space and prepare for a high-quality bean harvest by training Yellow Bai Bu Lao beans to climb vertical supports that are at least 10ft tall. After the harvest, leave the roots in the ground to decompose and release nitrogen into the soil for next year's crops. See page 28 of our free vegetable growing guide for more tips !
Harvesting Yellow Bai Bu Lao Pole Beans
Harvest the beans at 10-12" long when they start to bulge in their pods and are about 1" wide. Snap them off the vine and promptly consume or freeze for optimum flavor.
Yellow Bai Bu Lao Beans perform at their peak when incorporated into a stirfry or roasted as a side dish. They are also exceptionally delicious fresh, steamed, sauteed, and tossed into Italian pasta dishes or soups.
