Growing Organic French Garden Bush Beans in the Vegetable Garden
Direct sow Organic French Garden Bush Bean seeds after the last frost date, once soil temperatures have reached at least 60 F. Sow seeds 1 inch deep and space plants 3 to 4 inches apart in rows set 18 to 24 inches apart. As a compact bush type, French Garden needs no staking or trellis. Like all beans, it grows best without root disturbance, so direct sowing is strongly preferred over transplanting. Succession sowing every two weeks through midsummer will extend your harvest window considerably.
French Garden is a light feeder, and as a nitrogen-fixing legume it has little need for nitrogen-heavy fertilizers. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and water at the base of the plants rather than overhead to reduce the risk of fungal disease. Companion plants such as carrots, squash, and cucumbers grow well alongside bush beans. Avoid planting near onions or fennel, which can inhibit bean growth.
Harvesting Organic French Garden Bush Beans
Harvest French Garden beans when pods reach 5 to 7 inches in length but are still slender and pencil-thin - this is the hallmark of the haricot vert style and when flavor and tenderness are at their peak. Check plants every one to two days during peak production, as pods that are left too long become tough and lose their characteristic delicacy. Snap or snip pods cleanly from the stem. Regular harvesting is essential - the more you pick, the more the plant produces. Fresh pods keep in the refrigerator for up to five days. For best results, use them within two to three days of harvest.
