Growing Purple Romagna Artichoke in the Vegetable Garden
Start Purple Romagna artichoke seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before your last expected frost. Sow 0.25-0.5 inch deep in pots or cell trays filled with a rich, well-drained mix and keep at 70-85 F for germination. Once seedlings have several true leaves, thin or pot up, so each plant has room to develop a strong root system.
For reliable bud production, many growers give young plants a vernalizing chill by exposing them to temperatures below 50 F for about 1-3 weeks after they are well established. Transplant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed into deeply prepared, fertile soil. Space plants 24-36 inches apart in rows 36-60 inches apart. Water deeply at the base and mulch to keep roots cool and moist.
Harvesting of Purple Romagna Artichoke
Buds typically begin forming in the cool season following establishment. Harvest when heads are well-sized, firm, and still tightly closed, usually 3-5 inches across depending on growing conditions. Cut with several inches of stem attached.
For the best texture, harvest before bracts begin to open or show purple thistle bloom. If buds are left to flower, they open into striking purple thistle-like blooms that can be enjoyed fresh in the garden or cut for arrangements.
About Purple Romagna Artichoke Garden Seeds
Purple Romagna is a traditional Italian heirloom from the Emilia-Romagna region, selected for its rounded purple heads, meaty hearts, and robust plants. The buds often show a mix of green and purple with green tips, giving them a distinctive look in both garden and kitchen.
This gourmet variety is prized for its rich, nutty flavor and tender texture when steamed, grilled, roasted, or stuffed. Tall, architectural plants with silvery foliage also make Purple Romagna a handsome focal point in perennial beds or edible landscapes, especially in mild-winter regions where it returns year after year.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"Start Purple Romagna early, chill young plants briefly to mimic winter, and give each plant deep soil and regular water. Cut buds while tight for the most tender hearts, and let a few bloom if you want dramatic purple flowers."
