Growing Splendens Perfecta Tricolor Amaranthus in the Garden
Splendens Perfecta Tricolor is a warm-season ornamental that shines in summer heat. For the earliest color, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost. Sow about 0.25 inch deep in trays or small pots and keep at 65-75 F. Germination usually takes 10-15 days. Provide strong light so seedlings grow stocky, then harden off gradually before transplanting outdoors.
Transplant or direct sow after danger of frost when soil is thoroughly warm. Space plants 18-24 inches apart in rows 24-36 inches apart. Choose a sunny site with well-drained soil; Perfecta tolerates average soil but responds well to moderate fertility. Water regularly until plants are established, then allow the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings. Too much nitrogen or excess shade can reduce color intensity.
Harvesting of Splendens Perfecta Tricolor Amaranth
Colorful foliage begins to show early and intensifies as plants reach 1-2 feet tall. For cut stems, snip leafy branches when color is at its brightest, ideally in the cool of morning. Strip lower leaves and place stems immediately into water for fresh arrangements.
Plants remain showy from mid-summer until frost. If you wish to collect seed, allow some flower heads to mature and dry on the plant, then cut and thresh into a bag or over a tray. Self-sown seedlings may appear the following season in mild regions.
About Splendens Perfecta Tricolor Amaranthus Garden Seeds
Amaranthus tricolor splendens ‘Perfecta’, often sold as Joseph’s Coat or Summer Poinsettia, has been grown in ornamental and kitchen gardens for centuries. Historical accounts note its cultivation in Europe by the late 1500s and in American gardens, including Thomas Jefferson’s, by the 18th century.
This selection forms upright, well-branched plants with vivid red, yellow, and green foliage that creates a striking vertical accent in beds and borders. Perfecta is also used in some traditional cuisines for its tender young leaves. However, most gardeners grow it primarily for its bold, season-long color and standout performance in hot weather.
Tips From Our Gardeners
