Growing Non-GMO Carpet of Snow Alyssum Flower Seeds
Alyssum seeds are very hardy and should be sown straight into the garden bed after the danger of frost has passed. Do not plant outside until after the danger of frost has passed. For early spring blooms in cooler zones, germinate the seeds indoors 4-6 weeks prior to the last frost under a grow light and in warm soil, at least 60°F. Before transplanting outdoors, harden off the seedlings by gradually lengthening the time they spend outdoors. To increase the porosity of your soil, work compost, sand, and/or ground-up mulch into the soil.
Water the plants regularly but ensure that the leaves and the top 1-2 inches of soil can fully dry between irrigations. Although it is not necessary, pruning off any branches whose leaves have completed blooming can encourage a more desirable and compact growth habit. In hot and arid climates, provide part shade and a coating of mulch at the base.
Carpet of Snow Alyssum in the Flower Garden
These Alyssums will gladly attract beneficial insects of all kinds to pollinate your landscape or garden. Alyssum is also the perfect plant to fill in areas and prevent weeds while spring bloomers like Arabis or tulips are inactive. Similarly, it works nicely underneath larger plants like roses and clematis to protect the soil and roots from erosion or evaporation.
Landscape Use of Carpet of Snow Alyssum
Carpet of Snow Alyssum is perfect for pots and containers. It easily bulks out the lower area and spills over the edge to allow other, taller flowers room to be the focus above it.
