Sowing and Growing

Start Lovage seed inside 6-8 weeks before the last frost in your region. Germination takes about 2 weeks. This herb likes moisture and sun, but in the hottest areas, afternoon shade is appreciated. Mulching will help cool the soil and keep it moist. Give 2’ in between plants and cut off flower stems if seed is not being collected and if reseeding is not desired. This practice promotes fresh leaf growth. Once lovage plants have died in the fall, cut to the ground.

Harvesting

You can harvest lovage foliage when it has reached about 1’ tall. Plants started from seed inside will reach harvest stage earlier than plants started outside, usually in the first year. Collect seed heads when mature. The roots can also be dug up in the spring or fall. All parts of the lovage plant should be used sparingly so as not to overwhelm other flavors.
