Growing Non-GMO Silver Shield Plectranthus Flower Seeds
Silver Shield plectranthus is easy to grow from seed and recommended for direct sowing outdoors after the frost. For earliest blooms, begin seeds indoors 4-6 weeks prior and transplant plectranthus seedlings to a well-shaded spot either indoors or out. For direct sowing, plant 1-2 Silver Shield plectranthus seeds 0.125 inches deep and 24-36 inches apart in rich, humic, evenly moist, and well-drained soil in partial sun to full shade. Silver Shield plectranthus will only tolerate full sun if grown in a cool summer climate, otherwise, keep plants shaded in hot and humid gardens. Plants are native to eastern Australia's rainforests and can not endure frosts. Avoid overwatering because plants will not perform well if not properly drained.
It is essential to keep in mind that Silver Shield Plectranthus is not tolerant of frost, so it is best to avoid planting it in areas that experience freezing temperatures. If you live in a cooler climate, you may need to provide some extra protection for the plant. In general, it is best to provide Silver Shield Plectranthus with consistent temperatures and plenty of indirect sunlight to ensure that it grows healthy and strong. Prune the plant regularly to promote healthy growth and to prevent it from becoming overgrown. Do not prune more than 1/3rd of the plant at any given time.
Silver Shield Plectranthus in the Flower Garden
Cuban Oregan is perfect for highlighting walkways, borders, fences, or patios. It looks very attractive when planted with lavender, white petunias, and other plants with soft blooms that last all season. Incorporate it into your kitchen garden or ornamental landscape alike! The aroma is delightful yet not overpowering and will be intoxicatingly wonderful after it rains. Some gardeners use it like a ground cover around other valuable plants, as it also is known to repel insects and pests when healthy.
Harvesting Silver Shield Plectranthus
Harvest the leaves by plucking the individual leaves while young and preferably before flowing. When it comes to using Silver Shield Plectranthus in cooking, the leaves of the plant can be used fresh or dried in a variety of dishes. The leaves have a strong, oregano-like taste and can be used as a substitute for oregano in many recipes. They are also often used to make tea or to flavor soups and stews.
The leaves and stems can also be used for cut bouquets to add texture and aroma where other plants cannot. Snip off a bloom with some adjoining leaves at the base and store it in cool water.
