How to Grow Red Mizuna Hybrid Mustard
Sow seeds 4-6 weeks before the final frost date, or start indoors for transplanting. Sow 5-6 seeds half-inch deep and 4 inches apart in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Sow every two weeks for a continuous harvest. Start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before transplanting outside for an early harvest. Work soil amendments into the earth to increase fertility and moisture retention. Red Mizuna is ideal for undercropping and intercropping.
Thin the seedlings to 1 plant every 12 inches when the true leaves establish. Do not worry about bolting unless high temperatures persist. Red Mizuna also does well in unheated greenhouses in wintertime. Some gardeners have begun using this plant as a cover crop with success. The flavor is best when grown briskly so plant in fertile soil and keep well watered.
Harvesting Red Mizuna Mustard
Like lettuce, harvest large outer leaves while allowing smaller leaves to mature. Allow the entire plant to mature and harvest the entire head as well.
Culinary Tips
Excellent for sukiyaki, shabu shabu, yosenabe, ohitashi, pickling and salads. Red Mizuna is characteristic of fresh Japanese vegetables. Prepare this as you would any mustard green; take care not to overcook them, and a little seasoning goes a long way.
Tips From Our Gardeners
“I love red mizuna not only for the taste but also for the attractive look. Try incorporating it into your flower bed by interplanting with pansies and your other flowering annuals for visual interest as well as edibility.”
