Growing Non-GMO Osaka iQ Flowering Cabbage Flower Seeds
Osaka iQ flowering cabbage is a fall and winter plant. For the best color, sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your transplant date, usually in mid to late summer, then set plants out in the garden when the weather starts to cool. You can also sow seeds directly in summer for fall display. Sow 0.25 inch deep and expect germination in 10-12 days at about 70 F. Space plants 12 inches apart in rich, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Stratification is not needed.
The outer leaves stay green while the inner leaves color up as plants mature and nights drop below about 50 F, so be patient through the warm weeks of late summer. Keep the soil evenly moist and avoid heavy fertilizer, which can delay color. Spring planting is not recommended, since plants often bolt to seed before they color. Once a plant sends up a flower stalk, it has finished its ornamental life and should be pulled. Avoid planting brassicas in the same spot more often than every 5 or 6 years.
Osaka iQ Flowering Cabbage in the Flower Garden
Low and compact, Osaka iQ flowering cabbage fills gaps between other cool-season flowers beautifully. Try planting it in front of snapdragons or ornamental kale, or alongside pansies and violas, for varied heights and textures. Deer and rabbits may nibble the leaves, as with any cabbage relative, so protect plants where browsing is common.
Landscape Use of Osaka iQ Flowering Cabbage
The green outer leaves frame a ruffled center of red or white, so each plant looks like a large, rounded bloom. Its tidy, tight habit makes it excellent for borders, bedding, and fall-color filler, and it holds its color well into winter, even after light snow. It also suits pots, window boxes, and seasonal displays near entryways. Mix red and white plants in a single planting for a bold, formal pattern.
About Osaka iQ Flowering Cabbage Garden Seeds
Despite its name, flowering cabbage is really a smooth-leaf form of flowering kale, a member of the acephala group of Brassica oleracea. This is the same species that gives us cabbage, broccoli, kale, kohlrabi, and Brussels sprouts. It is not grown for its true flowers, but for the colorful inner leaves that make the whole plant look like a blossom.
Osaka iQ is an upgrade of the original Osaka series, bred to color up earlier and form tighter, more compact, uniform plants. It is available in red and white, and a mix of both. Flowering cabbage is edible and non-toxic, but it's bred for looks, not flavor, so it is best enjoyed in the garden. Plants rarely reseed, so they pose little risk of becoming weedy.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"Set your Osaka iQ cabbage out in late summer so it has time to settle in before the cold arrives. The first few frosty nights are what really bring out the color in the center of the plant."
