It can also be used for microgreens. The leaf coloring is distinct-- purplish-red on the top and green with red veins underneath. This unique vegetable has the sweet taste of spinach and the tenderness of komatsuna. Komatsuna is sorely underrated in the west. The tender leaves are round and relatively flat. This variety tolerates heat and will retain its deep purple color. Red Komatsuna grows well all year around, though it prefers mild temperatures. ~ 10,000 seeds / oz.

How to Grow Red Komatsuna Hybrid Mustard
Sow seeds at any time of year that the earth is workable, extending into autumn. Avoid hot summer planting for best results. Sow seeds every 2 to 4 weeks for continual harvest. For maximum returns, sow in 4 inches wide shallow drills. Keep soil moist and provide an open growing site. Fertilize if venation or paleness occurs. It may be suitable if the temperatures are similar, in the winter, as in sub-tropic areas; it is considered an all-year-round variety in general where proper coverage can be provided. Incorporate amendments into the earth to increase fertility and moisture retention. Red Komatsuna is outstanding for container and in situ sowing. Thin the seedlings once true leaves establish to desired spacing.
Harvesting Red Komatsuna Mustard
Similar to lettuce, harvest big outer leaves while allowing smaller leaves to grow on. Optionally, give the plants more time and space to grow and then harvest the entire plant like a head of cabbage. Harvest leaves and young stems when 8 inches tall.
Culinary Tips
Consume komatsuna at any stage. Use for yosenabe, sukiyaki, ohitashi, pickling, and salad. Enjoy these tasty leaves in a salad mix with other greens, in a sandwich, or very lightly sauteed. They will lose their purplish-red color if overcooked. It can be substituted in a variety of recipes for any green like cabbage, spinach, kale, and of course, other mustard greens!
