Growing Non-GMO Osaka Flowering Cabbage Vegetable Seeds
Osaka Series flowering cabbage is a frost-hardy green that can be sown directly in either the spring or the fall. Can be started indoors 6-8 weeks prior to set-out date. Often started in summer for fall set-out. Flowering cabbage can be quick to germinate between 1-2 weeks in full lighting. Osaka Series flowering cabbage is a hardy spring and winter performer and will benefit from shade during the long summer months. Plants can tolerate heavy moisture.
If your cabbage seedlings start to look stringy, the soil may not be fertile or retain enough moisture. If your area experiences high winds, protect the cabbage plants by mounding up soil around the base of the plants to protect the roots. Avoid planting any variety of brassica in the same location more often than every 5 or 6 years. Frost or prolonged temperatures below 50°F may cause premature bolting.
Osaka Flowering Cabbage in the Flower Garden
Osaka Flowering cabbages fill in the spaces between flowers perfectly. Try interplanting with pansies, snapdragons, or celosia for varying heights and textures. Plant these at the base of deep-rooted perennials to work together to preserve soil health and prevent erosion.
Landscaping with Osaka Flowering Cabbage
Osaka Flowering Cabbages are commonly used as ruffled, colorful filler plants in between other flowering or foliage plants. Although they are not loved for their true flowers, the colorful rosette of leaves makes the perfect addition to any landscaped yard. Because flowering cabbages are very adaptable to different lightings, they are perfect for tying the whole design of a yard together with unity.
About Osaka Flowering Cabbage Garden Seeds
Brassica oleracea var. capitata, commonly known as Flowering cabbage, is a member of the capitata group of Brassica oleracea or "headed" cabbage. Brassica oleracea includes many of the common cultivars of cabbage, broccoli, kohlrabi, collard greens, Brussels sprouts, and the var. capitata contains many of the edible and ornamental "headed" varieties.
Flowering cabbages are considered quite vigorous and fill in easily. Although, they have little risk of being weedy as there is little chance of reseeding for the next year.
Expect to enjoy 12” wide ‘blooms’ from early summer all the way until the frost takes them.
Although Flowering Cabbages are edible and non-toxic, it is discouraged for consumption. These have been selectively bred for looks and not flavor and are therefore lacking in the culinary department.
