Onion seeds are very small, delicate, and best when sprouted in either a tray or jar. If using the jar method, be sure to use a stainless steel lid to catch even the smallest seed. Like all other salad sprouts, onion is best kept in the dark during the entire growth until the final 6-24 hours before harvest to develop chlorophyll.
Benefits of Non-GMO Onion Sprouts
Onion sprouts contain great amounts of fiber, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, protein, vitamins A and C, as well as chlorophyll. The fiber will help to balance your digestive tract. Vitamin C will help to keep your immune system working at optimal levels. Onion sprouts also contain folate which is essential for women’s health.
Culinary Tips
Depending on preference, onion sprouts can be enjoyed as early as 7-8 days if seeds are soft enough, or as late as 14 days for thickest and crunchiest sprouts. Sprouted onion seeds taste like tiny onions but are not as strong -substitute them for large onions in salads and other dishes. Try substituting sprouted onion seeds where you might normally find raw onions minced, diced, or garnished. Onion sprouts deliver the fresh and satisfying snap of mature onion, regardless of color or profile, without having to tame and cut through acidic notes. No crying is necessary! These outstanding little onions are very low in calories, while still providing world-class flavor.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"Onion sprouts are probably some of the easiest to add to recipes for beginners, just because almost everyone already uses diced mature onion in regular cooking. Instead of garnishing a soup, salad, sandwich, or other food with raw onion, use onion sprouts! They are much more nutritionally dense and won’t overpower the other flavors."
