What is "Below Standard Seed"?
Simply put, it is seed that doesn't meet our state's (Utah) germination standard, a standard that varies slightly from seed to seed. Any seed intended for gardening that has a below standard germination rate cannot be sold alongside those that meet the state requirements (which often reflect the national requirements for germination).
We send samples of all our seed to the Utah Department of Agriculture, where they perform several tests to assess the quality of the seed. These state-wide and national seed standards are in line with Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA), which exist to ensure consumers that they are getting the highest quality seed, as advertised. Since this seed doesn't meet the state standard, we mark it as "Below Standard Seed".
Low germination seeds are non-refundable.

Growing Organic Spring Mix Lettuce Seeds in the Vegetable Garden
Can be transplanted or direct sown. Plant seeds in fertile, loose soil. Remember to keep the soil consistently moist. Thin down to final spacing once plants are established. For best results, plant in spring or fall. Harvest outside leaves for a continual harvest. For longer harvest, stagger plantings every 2-3 weeks.
The Organic Spring Lettuce Mix Includes:
Ithaca, Sunset, Tango Green and Red, Little Gem Cos, Lolla Rossa Darky, Royal Oakleaf, and Super Red Romaine
Ithaca - 50-60 Days to maturity. Ithaca crisphead lettuce seeds are a cool hardy favorite performing just as vigorously when sown direct as when transplanted. For earliest starts, begin indoors 4-6 weeks before final frost. Plant 2-3 Ithaca lettuce seeds 0.25 inches deep and 2 inches apart in Organically rich, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Seeds germinate in 7-10 days, thinning back to 1 plant every 4 in the garden. Harvest large outer leaves while allowing smaller leaves to continue to mature.
Sunset - 60 days to maturity. Lactuca sativa. Heirloom. Annual. Super deep beautiful red! A great variety for home and market growers alike. An excellent leaf-type that was the AAS winner in 1987 but has since become rare.
Tango Green - 33 days. Tango is a curled baby leaf variety that has a crisp, clean texture and holds up well with numerous salad dressings. Uniform attractive plants form tight erect rosettes, 12 inches across and 6-8 inches tall. Tango has been used for years in salad mixes and as favorite of the home gardener.
Tango Red - 45 to 55 Days to maturity. Lactuca sativa. Red Tango Leaf Lettuce Seeds. Annual, Heirloom, Open Pollinated, Non-GMO. Red Tango lettuce leaves are red, frilly, serrated, and curled. The lettuce heads are tight and erect. This variety has a somewhat stronger flavor than the related Green Tango lettuce.
Little Gem Cos - These little treasures grow into small, green heads of lettuce that are ready to harvest in approximately 70 days. The Little Gem is very heat tolerant, and is perfect for growing in smaller spaces. The leaves of the Little Gem have a mildly sweet flavor and are ideal for salads.
Lolla Rossa Darky - 50-70 days. These non-GMO Lollo Rosso lettuce seeds grow into green leaves with red edges that are ready to harvest in 60 days. The Lollo Rosso thrives in full sun or partial shade, and can be grown in zones 4-9. The leaves of the Lollo Rosso have a mildly sweet flavor. Lollo Rosso is a beautiful green color with dark pink edges. Grown in cooler areas, and slow to bolt, it is perfect for beginners.
Royal Oakleaf - 45-50 Days to maturity. Royal Oakleaf lettuce is an improved Oakleaf variety that is slower to bolt. Heads form large rosettes of uniform leaves that are heat resistant. Leaves are dark green and shiny with an oak leaf shape and many lobes.
Super Red Romaine - 40 days. Super Red Romaine Lettuce has long crunchy spoon shaped leaves that start green and turn to an intense red. Very intense colored romaine that is highly sought after. This is a great seller at farmers' markets for its color and holds up well under transport.
