Growing Microgreens Starter Guide
Growing Organic Borage Microgreens Seeds
Unlike some other seeds, borage seeds do not need to be soaked before planting. These microgreens can be grown in both soil and hydroponic systems, though soil is often preferred for its ability to produce better-flavored microgreens and because it is generally easier for beginners. Spread your seeds evenly approximately 0.25 inches apart to ensure uniform growth. After sowing, cover the tray to create a blackout period of 5-7 days, encouraging the seeds to grow taller as they search for light. Germination typically occurs within 5-7 days. Once germinated, expose the seedlings to fluorescent or LED grow lights.
Watering is best done from the bottom to prevent mold and mildew; simply fill the tray’s reservoir and allow the soil to absorb the water. Borage microgreens are usually ready for harvest 10-20 days after planting, depending on the growing conditions. Once harvested, they can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week, though they are best consumed fresh to enjoy their full flavor and nutritional benefits. These microgreens, known for their vibrant green color, cucumber-like flavor, and crisp texture, are a versatile addition to salads, sandwiches, smoothies, and garnishes, making them a delightful and nutritious choice for any meal.
Benefits of Borage Microgreens
Borage microgreens have numerous health benefits, thanks to their high content of essential vitamins and minerals. The presence of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is particularly noteworthy, as it has been linked to anti-inflammatory effects and potential benefits for skin health and hormone regulation.
Culinary Tips
Borage microgreens are incredibly versatile in the kitchen. They can be added to salads, sandwiches, wraps, smoothies, or used as a garnish on everything from soups to cocktails to desserts. These microgreens are typically used fresh rather than cooked to preserve their delicate flavor and nutritional content. Their unique taste and visual appeal make them a delightful addition to a wide range of dishes, making your meals not only healthier but also more enjoyable.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"If you are interested in the health benefits of microgreens but haven't been interested in the spicy flavors of the oh-so-popular radish and broccoli microgreens, give borage a shot! Just as nutritionally dense as the others but with a much more mild and crowd-pleasing flavor."
