Growing Non-GMO Black Prince Tomato Vegetable Seeds
Germinate the seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before transplanting them outdoors. Keep the soil at or above 80°F during germination. Seeds will fail to sprout in cool soil; transplanting out too early in the spring can negatively affect plant vigor. Transfer outdoors about two weeks after the danger of frost has passed. Harden off the sprouts before transplanting to avoid shock. Work fertilizer or compost into the soil before planting; transplant when the soil temperature is consistently at least 75°F.
Avoid fertilizers that are mostly nitrogen; if the nitrogen levels are too high, it will result in more foliage than fruit. Stake the bushes early to avoid falling. Fertilize at time of planting and twice more with a well-balanced fertilizer. Tomatoes tend to be heavy feeders. Cover the soil with black or dark-colored plastic if growing in a cooler region to retain soil heat. Water regularly enough to keep the soil from drying out. Reduce irrigations during harvest.
Black Prince Tomato in the Vegetable Garden
Black Prince Tomato plants can be an integral part of any vegetable garden. The deep-colored fruits are not only delicious but beautiful too. They require staking, and if interplanted with shorter and larger plants, the combination is quite attractive.
This variety is perfect for container gardens. One plant should have a cage or stake and at least a 10” pot for optimal plant health.
Harvesting Black Prince Tomato
Black Prince Tomatoes are ready for harvest when they are deep reddish purple and evenly firm. It is best to remove them from the plant when the upper half is dark in color but there are still traces of green.
