Growing Non-GMO Organic Black Zucchini Summer Squash Vegetable Seeds
Start zucchini seeds indoors about 2-3 weeks before the final frost date, or direct sow as instructed below. Keep the seeds in a dark, moist, humid environment. Once the seedlings have emerged after about 2 days, promptly expose them to 8-12 hours of sunlight. Delaying to provide enough sunlight will ruin the seedlings. To direct sow, follow the mounding instructions below as well as all the germination tips mentioned. Direct sow up to three weeks past the final frost date. Soil temperatures must be consistently at or above 60F for germination to occur.
If seedlings were started indoors, begin hardening them off at least a week before the transplant date. Place them outside during the warmest part of the day while temperatures are still fluctuating. Gradually increase the amount of time they spend outdoors until they are acclimated to their transplant environment. Prior to transplantation or direct sowing, prepare the garden bed. The garden soil should be well-draining and fertile. To direct sow, follow the row planting space recommendation under the attribute tab above or form 8-10 inch tall mounds to plant the seedlings or seeds in. The mounds should be 4-5 feet apart. Transplant 2-3 seedlings or 5-6 seeds per mound and later thin. Plant seeds 0.5 inches deep. Fertilization throughout the growing season has been proven to greatly improve fruit production and plant health. Start with a heavy nitrogen feed and transition to an even feed as the fruit sets on.

Stories From Our Gardeners
"My mother-in-law grows zucchini most years and has frequently struggled with blossom or end rot. This is caused by low calcium levels in the soil. Add a calcium supplement to the garden at the beginning of the season to avoid this common issue!"
