Heirloom Eclipse L303 Onion Growth Habits:
The Eclipse L303 onion is an heirloom Bermuda-type that grows well in southern regions of the United States that have a long growing season. This open-pollinated onion variety is well-adapted to the sandy soils of Florida.
Round, medium-size bulbs form on the Eclipse L303 onion variety when grown in evenly moist, well-drained soil. For best results, onions should be grown in a weed-free environment. Home gardeners will find Eclipse L303 white onions easy to grow in raised beds and containers, as they have shallow root systems and require only about 2" to 6" between each plant.
Eclipse L303 onion seeds can be directly sown in the ground when the soil reaches 50 degrees F, or they can be started indoors 8 to 10 weeks before your last frost date then transplanted at the desired spacing.
Various Uses for Eclipse L303 Heirloom Onions:
Eclipse L303 onions offer a mild, crisp flavor, making them a delicious onion to eat fresh on salads, sandwiches, or burgers. They can also be cooked in soups and stews and added to meat dishes.
Heirloom Eclipse L303 Onion Benefits:
Onions, including Eclipse L303 onions, contain cancer-fighting compounds as well as a good amount of vitamins C, which helps to keep the immune system working properly. Onions can also help regulate blood sugar and lower cholesterol.
It's a common practice for home growers to interplant onions with fruit trees and other crops, as the scent of onions is thought to deter deer and other pests.
Additional Information:
The Eclipse L303 heirloom onion variety is a descendent of a Bermuda onion called Crystal Wax, which originally came from the Canary Islands and was introduced to Southern Texas in the late 1800s. The Eclipse L303 onion is a parent of the Excel (986) onion.
