Growing Non-GMO Delosperma Ice Plant Flower Seeds
Ice Plant is easy to grow from seed and recommended for direct sowing outdoors after the frost. For earliest blooms, begin seeds indoors 6-8 weeks prior. Delosperma seeds will germinate in 7-21 with full lighting and harden off to a sunny spot in the garden or an equally bright place indoors. Ice Plant is most popularly grown as a decorative indoor succulent or trailing from a basket, window box, or planter. Lightly press 4-6 Ice Plant delosperma seeds into average, medium dry, and well-drained soil in full sun. Ice Plant is a full sun performer tolerant to heat and drought and will die if overwatered and not properly drained. Water sparingly. Do not soak these seeds! They are pelleted. This means they are covered in a clay coat that is easily removed by water after planting. This clay coating makes it easier to see and plant these seeds.
Fertilizer is rarely needed. If you notice your plant is pale or struggling and all other factors are good, supplement with an even, low-strength feed. Keep weeds away, most importantly in the early stages, so that the plants can establish themselves. Deadheading is not required for it to bloom but it will increase the number of blooms. These darling flowers will return each year with minimal overwinter care. If you are concerned that the winters in your area are too harsh, place a layer of straw mulch on top of the plant to protect the roots from a hard freeze. In the fall or early spring, prune off any dead foliage in preparation for the new flush of growth. Make sure the soil has dried out before winter sets in to prevent the plant from sitting in water and rotting with the approach of winter.
Delosperma Ice Plant in the Flower Garden
Delosperma is a perfect ground cover for sandy flower gardens. Protect the precious soil with this lovely plant which adds texture and color to any bed. Also, use them in potted arrangements of flowers for patios or tables. The trailing habit makes a wonderful addition that will draw the eye and compliment its fellow flowers. Keep in mind that these are fantastic ground covers, however, they do not handle foot traffic well.
Landscape Use of Delosperma Ice Plant
Ice Plants are known to thrive in coastal, gravel, and Mediterranean climate gardens. They do well on sandy banks and slopes as a ground cover to prevent erosion and heighten the visual interest of the area as well. Finally, they even excel in urban areas because they can survive on little supplemental water but they are undeniably gorgeous for the passersby!
About Delosperma Ice Plant Garden Seeds
When growing under glass or in a greenhouse, watch out for aphids and mealybugs. These are generally not problematic in open-air gardens.
Delosperma cooperi is also safe to grow where pets and children are present because it is non-toxic. However, it is deer and squirrel-resistant.
Delosperma cooperi, more commonly known as Ice Plant, is native to South Africa but has been naturalized throughout many similar maritime climates including the Mediterranean and North America. Delosperma cooperi earns its name "ice plant" not from any tolerance to ice, but from its leaves and petals that appear to shimmer and refract like ice crystals.
Tips From Our Gardeners
”Delosperma reminds me a lot of portulaca. If you like the look of portulaca but have struggled to grow it or want a different bloom look, Ice Plants are a great option! They are even incredibly attractive to interplant because they have similar growing requirements and leaf shapes but flower differently."
