Growing Organic Grey Zucchini Summer Squash in the Vegetable Garden

Grey Zucchini is a warm-season crop that should be direct sown after all danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures have reached at least 70 F. For an earlier start, begin seeds indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last expected frost. Sow seeds 1 inch deep, planting two to three seeds per spot, then thin to the strongest seedling. Space plants 24 to 36 inches apart in rows 36 to 48 inches apart. Choose a site with full sun and fertile, well-drained soil amended with compost or aged manure. Mounding the soil 6 to 8 inches high helps warm the root zone and improves drainage around the base of the plant.

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and water at the base of the plant to reduce the risk of powdery mildew. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and keep roots cool during peak summer heat. Fertilize after the first flowers appear and again once fruit begins to set. Grey Zucchini is a prolific producer, and frequent harvesting encourages the plant to continue setting new fruit throughout the season.

Harvesting Grey Zucchini Summer Squash

Harvest fruit when it reaches 5 to 7 inches long for the best flavor and texture. At this size, the flesh is tender, mildly sweet, and not yet starchy. Check plants every one to two days during peak production, since summer squash can size up quickly. Use a sharp knife or pruning shears to cut fruit cleanly at the stem rather than twisting or pulling. Squash blossoms are also edible and are best harvested in the morning while still fresh. Harvested fruit stores well in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

About Organic Grey Zucchini Summer Squash Garden Seeds

Grey Zucchini is an Italian heirloom that dates back to the early 1800s and is considered one of the parent types behind many modern zucchini hybrids and cultivars.

The fruit is smooth, straight, and medium grey-green with distinctive silvery speckles, giving it strong visual appeal at farmers' markets and on the dinner table.

This variety is notably heat-tolerant and adaptable across a wide range of climates, performing especially well in dry growing regions where other squash varieties may struggle.

Grey Zucchini has a mildly spiny plant habit, which makes bare-handed harvesting relatively comfortable compared to more heavily spined summer squash varieties.

Tips From Our Gardeners

Summer squash rewards you for paying attention. Once fruit starts coming, check the plants every day or two and harvest anything that reaches 5 to 7 inches. If you let them go, you will end up with oversized, starchy fruit that saps energy the plant could put toward new production. Steady picking keeps the harvest coming all season long.
