Non-GMO, Open-Pollinated Laurentian Rutabaga Growth Habits:
Laurentian rutabagas are a root crop in the Brassicaceae (cabbage) family. Unlike other brassicas, rutabagas are tolerant of soils with low fertility, however, they require loose soil for proper root development and may be sensitive to boron deficiency.
As rutabagas are a cool-weather crop, rutabaga seeds can be directly sown into the garden soil as soon as it can be worked in the spring. However, to harvest in the fall, you may want to plant seeds in early- to mid-summer, depending on the length of your growing season. A light frost near the time of fall harvest will improve the flavor.
You can plant Laurentian heirloom rutabaga seeds in full sun or partial shade.
Various Uses for Laurentian Rutabaga:
Laurentian rutabagas are a sweet heirloom root crop that can be used to make fall and winter soups or eaten fresh on salads. Rutabagas can also be boiled and mashed, roasted, cut and fried, and more.
Heirloom Laurentian Rutabaga Health Benefits:
Rutabagas have high levels of vitamins C and E, plus many essential nutrients, including potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Rutabagas are also a good source of fiber, which is important for digestive health.
Additional Information:
While rutabagas are sometimes called winter turnips, Swedish turnips, Russian turnips, or Canadian turnips, they are actually a sweeter-tasting relative of a true turnip (Brassica rapa var. rapa).
