Growing Black Spanish Round Radishes in the Vegetable Garden
Black Spanish Round Radishes are best planted in the spring or late summer to early fall, allowing them to mature fully. Select a well-drained area with ample sunlight for planting. Directly sow the seeds 0.5 inches deep and 1 to 2 inches apart. The rows should be approximately 12 to 18 inches apart. Water the soil daily until it is moist; avoid overwatering. When the seedlings are about 1 inch tall, thin the crop by removing some seedlings, leaving 2 to 4 inches of space between the remaining plants. Allow for the radish to mature, then harvest.
Black Spanish Round Radishes benefit from other garden plants. Consider companion planting with herbs and salad greens like cilantro, dill, parsley, lettuce, spinach, or kale. To prevent pest problems, rotate crops yearly. Growing radishes near other brassicas like broccoli, cabbage, or cauliflower may lead to large groups of the same pests. Avoid growing these crops in the same location as each other year after year to disrupt pest lifecycles.
Harvesting Black Spanish Round Radish
In approximately 50 to 70 days, the radish will be ready for harvesting. Look for a plant height of 10 to 12 inches and a bulb size between 3 to 4 inches in length and diameter. Loosen the soil around the bulb and pull the radish free. Check the maturity of the bulb; it should be firm. Avoid harvesting any roots that are soft.
