Growing Red Cal Rose Peppers in the Vegetable Garden
Once you have received your Non-GMO pepper seeds from True Leaf Market, it is best to start them indoors. While pepper seeds can be sown in situ (directly in the garden), in most climates this will not provide the best start for your plants to have a productive season. Six to eight weeks prior to the last spring frost of your area, germinate your seeds. Use seed starting trays or cells (planting 2-3 seeds per cell), filled with a pre-moistened germination medium. Use a humidity dome to retain warmth and moisture. A grow mat can provide the warmth necessary (75 F) to achieve germination.
As soon as the seedlings have sprouted, remove the humidity dome and place them in direct and full sun for a minimum of 8 hours per day. Use grow lights positioned just above the tallest plant (adjusting as they grow) to avoid leggieness. If you use artificial light, be sure to turn them off at night. Once true leaves appear thin the seedlings down to one per cell (or one per 2-3 inches) and use a light fertilizer to give them a boost.
Once the seedlings are at least 6 weeks old and 4 inches tall, begin acclimating them to the outdoors. Slowly leave them outside in the sun and light wind for a few more hours each day. Bring them inside if temperatures dip below 50 F. Then, once all danger of frost has passed and the seedlings are ready to be outdoors full time, prepare the garden bed.
Choose a place in the garden that has not grown any other pepper, tomato, potato, or eggplant in at least the last 2 years. Amend the soil with well-rotted compost or worm castings for optimal soil fertility. Dig holes about 2 feet apart in rows 3 feet apart. Bury the seedlings up to their previous soil line. Fill in the holes around the roots, lightly tamp down the soil, and irrigate heavily. Apply a dark-colored much around the base of the plants.
As the plants grow, provide structural support. This is especially important when they begin to set on fruit as sometimes the weight of the fruit can cause the plants to fall over. Check the leaves regularly for pests and diseases. Take quick action when necessary to avoid spread.
Harvesting Red Cal Rose Peppers
Cal Rose bell peppers can be harvested throughout the growing season and should be removed from the plant as they reach maturity to make way for more fruits. While they can be harvested and consumed when green, they are known for their flavor and texture after having matured on the plant to a deep red color. Hold the pepper in your non-dominant hand and with your dominant hand, slice the pepper off the plant about 2 inches up the stem. Peppers can continue to ripen indoors at room temperature if necessary to preserve fruit from a frost.
About Red Cal Rose Pepper Garden Seeds
Cal Rose Red Bell Peppers are sweet peppers with no heat (0 Scoville Heat Units). They are suitable for growing in garden plots, raised beds, and greenhouses. These peppers are bulky pimento-type peppers with a sweet taste. Each one has 4 lobes and thick walls with tender flesh.
Skin matures from green to rose red. Plants are 24” tall with thick green foliage. Indoor sow seeds and transplant to full sun in the spring. After 75-85 days, harvest peppers when they reach mature color. Use these peppers for stuffing, grilling, and salads.
Peppers are wonderful candidates for container gardens as they only grow 2-3 feet high. For an optimal container-grown harvest, do not reuse soil, ensure full sun, fertilize regularly, and provide at minimum of 5 gallons of soil per plant. All other instructions apply.
These delicious fruits are wonderful when sliced and eaten fresh, stuffed and baked, stewed, canned, and more. They likely won’t last long in your kitchen, the tender flesh is hard to pass up.
