How to Grow Taichung 13 Snap Pea
Sow seeds in early to late spring after last frost. Sow seeds in fall, 8-10 weeks before the first frost date. Provide water regularly. Heavy irrigation during flowering can interfere with pollination. Train the vines to climb vertical supports at least 6' tall. Pea plants do not need much fertilizer. They are nitrogen fixers and provide most of their nutrient needs self-sufficiently. Where pale leaves or venation is present, add low nitrogen fertilizer. Cultivate this variety for the edible pods and the tender shoots. Whenever possible, plant members of the pea family in a six-year rotation.
Harvesting Taichung 13 Snap Pea
Harvest the pods when they begin to swell. For shoots, pinch off a few young tendrils soon after they emerge. To not hinder the plant’s overall health and still promote pod development, take young shoots sparingly.
Culinary Tips
Eat these snap peas fresh for a healthy snack, or add them to a salad. Adding them toward the end of cooking, a stir-fry is delightful.
Stories From Our Gardeners
“Fresh sugar snap peas are one of my favorite snacks in the world! If you have had the ones at the store and did not like them, you must try growing them yourself. They are so much sweeter and more tender.”

Snap Peas can sometimes be an attraction for pests because of their sweetness. Keep an eye out for armyworms, cucumber beetles, thrips, leaf miners, spider mites, and nematodes. A regular application of neem oil solution can help prevent infestations.
