Growing Oasis Chicory in the Vegetable Garden

Direct sow in spring or late summer. Sow shallowly at 0.12 inch and keep evenly moist until established. Often broadcast alone (6-8 lbs per acre) or with other crops (2-5 lbs per acre) as spring/summer forage for grazing livestock. For kitchen greens, thin or transplant to 8-12 inches in rows 18-24 inches. Mulch lightly to conserve moisture and encourage tender leaves.

Harvest young leaves for salads or larger leaves for cooking. In hot spells, provide steady water to keep growth mild. Plants develop a taproot and can perennialize in suitable climates.

Cut outer leaves as needed once plants are established, or harvest whole rosettes when full-sized. For roots, dig in fall, scrub, slice, and roast for a coffee-style brew.
