Growing Non-GMO Nicotiana Starmaker Series Flower Seeds
Most home gardens do not have the warm tropical conditions suitable to directly sow Starmaker Series nicotiana seeds in the garden. However, for annual blooming, start nicotiana seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the final frost. Seeds will germinate with full lighting in 2-3 weeks. Once germinated, transplant seedlings when there are two sets of true leaves to an indoor container or harden off if transplanting outside to a warm yet shaded spot in the garden. Plant 2-3 Starmaker Series nicotiana seeds 0.25 inch deep and 12-15 inch apart in consistently moist, organically rich, and well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Plants will show signs of wilting in long summers if not provided with shade. Do not plant near vegetable gardens with other members of the nightshade family (i.e. eggplant, tomato, potato, or peppers) because of susceptibility to common viruses.
Fertilize with a complete fertilizer at the time of transplanting and then every 4 weeks during the growing season. Mixing in compost can lessen the need for fertilizers. Keep weeds away, especially while the seedlings are getting established so that the plants can be free of competition. Water at about 1 inch per week. Once mature, they can tolerate a light drought. Although they can grow in zone 10, Nicotiana does not prefer extremely hot temperatures and will need shade in hot summers. Pinch back the center of the stem of the young plant to encourage a bushier habit. Deadhead spent blooms to stimulate new flower; stop deadheading towards the end of the season if you wish the plant to reseed.
