For direct outdoor sowing, choose a sunny spot with organic material worked into the soil as soon as frost has passed. For the hardiest sweet pea plants, sow Knee High Mix seeds at the bottom of a 6-inch trench. Soak sweet pea Knee High Mix seeds for 24 hours prior to planting; germination will take about 12 days. Once plants are established, fill in the trench gradually until the ground is level. In mild climates, plant in September through November. Sweet peas generally originated from the Mediterranean, specifically Sicily, southern Italy, and the Aegean Islands.

Note: Sweet peas require temperatures below 60 F to initiate blooming. Once they have bloomed, they have higher temperature tolerance.

Although it is not necessary for most growing zones, starting these indoors will ensure the earliest spring blooms. After just 2-3 weeks, transplant them outside after hardening off.
