Growing Thelma Sanders Acorn Winter Squash in the Vegetable Garden
Sow seeds 1 inch deep in warm soil after frost danger has passed. Direct sow in hills or rows, or start indoors 3-4 weeks early in biodegradable pots to avoid root disturbance. Space plants 24-36 inches apart, with 48-60 inches between rows for vine run and airflow.
Keep soil evenly moist and mulch to conserve water and suppress weeds. Side-dress with compost or a balanced fertilizer as vines begin to run and again at flowering. Encourage pollinators and avoid overhead watering to limit mildew. Companion well with corn and beans; avoid potatoes.
Harvesting of Thelma Sanders Acorn Winter Squash
Harvest when rinds are hard, color has set from cream to light tan, and stems turn dry and corky—before hard frost. Cut fruit, leaving 2-3 inches of stem. Cure 10-14 days in a warm, dry, ventilated place around 80 to 85 F, then store cool and dry. Properly cured fruits keep for months.
