How to Grow Hotau Improved Chinese Cabbage
These seeds can be sown a variety of times throughout the year due to their short growing time. Whenever you sow, try to have the main growing temperatures be around 60 F and plan on using fertilizer or compost. Avoid problems by being aware of the soil moisture level and always keeping it moist; mulch at the time of planting to reduce rotting, avoid premature bolting, and improve soil moisture.
This variety has shallow roots and thrives with shallow but frequent irrigations. Where high winds are a concern, mound up soil around the base of the plants to protect the roots. Avoid planting brassicas in the same location more often than every 6 years. Temperatures below 50 F can cause bolting.
Harvesting Hotau Improved Chinese Cabbage
Harvest the leaves when they are fresh and crisp. You can pick individual outer off leaves a few at a time but, it is more common with this variety to cut the whole head off a quarter inch above the ground.
Culinary Tips
