Growing Organic Suyo Long Cucumber in the Vegetable Garden
Cucumbers are best directly sown a week or two after your last frost date, as their roots are sensitive to transplanting. However, you may still start them indoors 3-4 weeks before transplanting. Cucumbers require both warm soil and air conditions and may sustain damage with temperatures below 50 F. Sow 1 inch deep, 18-24 inches apart, with rows spaced 48 inches. For the healthiest plants, grow using a trellis to promote good airflow.
Suyo long are parthenocarpic, meaning they are self-pollinating and will produce almost seedless fruits. If allowed to cross-pollinate with other varieties, the seeds may be more pronounced at harvest. It is best to grow parthenocarpic varieties away from monoecious or gynoecious types. This makes them a great selection for greenhouse production, as pollinators are not necessary to induce fruit production.
Harvesting Organic Suyo Long Cucumber
Because the Organic Suyo Long Cucumber forms a long fruit up to 15 inches, a vertical support not only promotes good airflow, but also allows space for healthy and productive fruit formation. Harvesting the fruits while young will encourage higher yields. Remove the fruits using harvesting or pruning shears to avoid damaging the cucumbers.
About Organic Suyo Long Cucumber Garden Seeds
Suyo Long is a burpless variety. This means it contains lower levels of cucurbitacin, a natural compound associated with bitter-flavored cucumbers. This compound also attracts cucumber beetles. Varieties like this one will likely be less attractive to the common cucumber pest because of their lower cucurbitacin composition.
This is a parthenocarpic type that will perform well in enclosed growing spaces and greenhouses without the presence of pollinating insects.
This is an open-pollinated heirloom traditional variety from northern China.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"To prevent cross-pollination in home gardens, consider using a floating row cover. This can also help keep pests away as the young plants develop."

Cucumis sativus
|
Cucumber Type: |
Slicing - Slicing cucumbers typically are longer and have a thicker, smoother skin that is usually peeled off before eating. Ideal for eating fresh and in salads. Burpless - Burpless cucumbers have reduced levels of cucurbitacin. Burpless cucumbers are reportedly less bitter tasting, and are less likely to cause digestive issues (indigestion, bloating, burping, etc) in some people. They are also less attractive to cucumber beetles. |

Vining. Cucumbers can grow along the soil surface, but are often healthier with a vertical support to promote airflow. |
Soil Preference: |
Cucumbers prefer rich, well-draining soils with a pH of 6-6.8. Consistent watering is required for abundant yields. |
Temperature Preference: |
Warmer 64-86 F. Cucumbers do not tolerate frost and often become damaged at temperatures below 50F. |

Full Sun |
Other
Direct Sow: |
Yes, this is the preferred method for growing cucumber seeds. |
Start Indoors: |
Yes, while direct sowing is the preferred method, starting indoors is common. Start 3-4 weeks before transplanting. Cucumbers need warm air and soil temperatures. |
Cucumber Pollination: |
Parthenocarpic - These cucumbers are self-pollinating, seedless, and do not require insect pollinating activity. This makes them ideal for greenhouse production. If they are cross-pollinated with other types, they may yield seeded fruit. |
Growth Speed: |
Mid - Around 45-64 Days from sowing. |
Plant Width: |
36-48 inches |
Deer Resistant: |
Yes. The hairy leaves and prickly spines of cucumbers generally lead deer to pursue other plants first. However, deer will eat them if there aren’t more appetizing options nearby. |
Germination Temperature: |
75-85 F |
Pests and Diseases: |
This variety is resistant to Cucumber Mosaic Virus, Downy Mildew, and Powdery Mildew. Cucumbers are generally known to be susceptible to snails, aphids, cutworms, spider mites, squash vine borers, and cucumber beetles. Common diseases include powdery mildew and cucumber mosaic virus. Reduce the effects of pests and disease by practicing crop rotation. |
