Growing Non-GMO Broad Windsor Fava Bean Vegetable Seeds

Sow seeds in full sun in either the fall or the spring. Plant according to the chart in the attributes tab above or by broadcast and water in heavily. Cover each seed with about an inch of soil and keep 4 inches between plants and 20 inches or more between rows. Maintain even moisture. Once established, allow the soil to dry slightly between irrigations to prevent waterborne diseases.

Fava beans can be soaked before planting to increase germination speed and percentages. For an even earlier crop, begin the seeds indoors 2-3 weeks before the final frost and transplant them outdoors after a hardening-off period. Thin or transplant the plants to be at least 8-10 inches apart.

Fava Beans can be a ground cover, vegetable, or grown upright as a background plant in the garden. Broad beans are also nitrogen fixators and are excellent for garden rotations to put greatly-needed nitrogen back in the soil. After harvesting, leave the roots in the earth to decay.

When using broad beans as a cover crop, sow in the fall as a cool-hardy cover crop to restore nitrogen into the soils in the off-season.

To harvest fresh beans, wait until the pods have reached their full size and the beans inside have swollen up. The leaves should just be starting to turn yellow. For a dried bean harvest, wait until the leaves have become brown and remove the entire plant (or just the vines) for further drying. For greens, pick leaves when still young and bright green in color; this will be much earlier than when the pods themselves are ready.
