October is a month of contrasts. In cold-winter zones, first frost lands right in the middle of the month, closing the book on new plantings and shifting the focus to harvest and protection. In mild-winter zones, October is prime transplant season. The August and September starts are hardening off and heading outside in waves. And in warm-winter zones, October is arguably the busiest planting month of the fall. Direct sowing is wide open, and transplanting continues at a steady pace. Wherever you garden, the planting dates below are a cutoff to plan ahead of, not a deadline to push right up against.

Cold Winter Zones (3-7): The direct-sow and transplant windows have already closed for the year. October's job is protecting what is already in the ground. Kale, chard, brassicas, and other cool-season crops can outlast that first frost by weeks with a floating row cover or cold frame. This is a harvest-and-close-out month, not a planting one.

Mild Winter Zones (8-9a): October keeps the momentum from September going. The brassicas, greens, and alliums started indoors last month are moving outside throughout October, and there is still time for one last direct-sown crop before that window shuts too. Short-day onion transplants from September are settling in and need consistent care.

Warm Winter Zones (9b-12): October is the height of fall planting here. Direct sowing is broadly open. Greens, root crops, and alliums can all go in this month, while the brassica and onion transplants started in August and September continue moving outside. The fall and winter garden that defines these zones is now fully underway.
