Growing Dr. Wyche's Yellow Tomatoes in the Vegetable Garden
For Dr. Wyche's Yellow Tomato, begin the planting process by sowing seeds indoors 7-9 weeks before your last spring frost date. Plant the seeds at a depth of 0.25 inches in a well-draining, loose (sandy loam) soil mix. Keep the germination temperature between 65-85 F, and expect germination within 7-10 days. Once seedlings have reached a suitable size and all danger of frost has passed, transplant them outdoors with a spacing of 18-24 inches between plants and 36 inches between rows. This indeterminate variety, with its sparse foliage and slightly flattened golden yellow fruits, requires support such as a cage or trellis as it continues to grow throughout the season.
Throughout the growing process, maintain a regular watering schedule, avoiding overwatering to prevent diseases like blossom end rot. Watch for common pests such as the tomato hornworm, aphids, and whiteflies, and address any issues promptly using organic neem-based products. Provide a nutrient-balanced soil with slightly acidic conditions (pH 6.2 to 6.8) to promote healthy fruiting. Consider companion planting with basil, marigolds, or nasturtiums to deter pests naturally.
Harvesting Dr. Wyche's Yellow Tomatoes
Dr. Wyche's Yellow Tomato is an indeterminate variety, meaning it will produce tomatoes continually throughout the season. Harvest the golden yellow fruits when they reach a size of 8-20 ounces, and the flesh is meaty with few seeds. The ripe fruits should have a rich flavor, and the shoulders may show a hint of green. Regularly check the plants for mature fruits, and use clean pruning shears to cut the tomatoes from the vine, taking care not to damage the plant.
About Dr. Wyche's Yellow Tomato Garden Seeds
Dr. Wyche's Yellow is a true heirloom with a great personal history behind it. It takes its name from Dr. John Wyche, an Oklahoma dentist and gardener (and co-owner of the Cole Brothers Circus) who grew and preserved the variety for years before introducing it to the Seed Savers Exchange in 1985, not long before his death. After his passing, fellow tomato enthusiast Craig LeHoullier acquired the seed and brought it into wider commercial circulation during the 1990s, where it's remained a favorite among heirloom growers ever since.
The fruit itself is a large beefsteak, typically 10-16 ounces, with a flattened globe shape and shiny, orange-yellow skin sometimes marked with green shoulders. Inside, the flesh is meaty and nearly seedless, and growers prize its rich, sweet flavor with subtle tropical and earthy notes. Plants are vigorous and indeterminate, producing over a long late-summer season, and the fruit's firm texture and low seed content make it an excellent slicer for fresh eating.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"To enhance the flavor profile of Dr. Wyche's Yellow Tomato, try incorporating a balanced and organic fertilizer during the growing season. This can contribute to the development of a richer and more robust taste in the fruits. Additionally, prune the plant selectively to allow better air circulation, reducing the risk of diseases and promoting healthier overall growth."
