Growing Non-GMO Scabiosa HiGro Mix Flower Seeds
For early blooming, start HiGro Mix scabiosa seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the final frost date. Scabiosa seeds will germinate in 2-3 weeks. Once germinated, move to a fluorescent grow light until two sets of true leaves have developed. Transplant HiGro Mix scabiosa seedlings to an indoor container or pot and harden them off gradually if transplanting outside. Scabiosa seeds can also be sown directly once the frost has passed, but blooming will occur later in the season. For direct sowing, lightly cover 3-4 HiGro Mix scabiosa seeds in soil 12-18 inches apart in average, medium moist, and well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. HiGro Mix seeds thrive in well-drained soil. Avoid overhead watering by watering soil directly to minimize wetting foliage. Plants will benefit from partial shade during severe summers.
Scabiosas will bloom from mid-spring throughout the summer once established. During the first year of planting, you may only see blooms for the summer depending on your planting time. Lightly fertilize in spring with compost or a plant feed of choice. Always follow manufacturers’ instructions on store-bought fertilizers. Scabiosa plants are hardy and easygoing but should be protected from prolonged cold, wet conditions when possible. Deadheading will extend the blooming season. Continue deadheading throughout the summer to avoid self-seeding. If allowed to self-seed, thin seedlings when they come up in the spring. In the fall, cut plants down to soil level, they will rejuvenate in the spring.

These three-inch pompom blooms are exactly what your garden needs this year. They are attractive to butterflies but ignored by deer!
Scabiosa caucasia is native to the Caucasus Mountains that run east to west between the Black and Caspian seas of Russia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. It is also commonly known as Pincushion Flower or Caucasian scabious and is a famously nectar-rich variety attractive to many butterflies, bees, and other important insects and pollinators.
Pincushion flowers generally love full sun exposure. They only like partial shade in very hot, southern summers.
Stories From Our Gardeners
"I love scabiosa because they remind me of a small version of ornamental allium. I have always loved allium blooms, but pincushion flowers are smaller and easier to manage. The perfect alternative!"
