How to Grow Akhana Fujimame Hyacinth Beans
Sow seeds in the early summer, well after the last frost, in a warm, sunny location. The soil should be moist during germination. However, cold, wet soil will cause the seeds to rot before sprouting. If you are container gardening, be sure to provide a deep container for the vigorous roots of this plant.
As the plants become established, allow the soil to dry between deep waterings. If the plants look pale throughout the season, boost them with a low-nitrogen fertilizer. Save space and prepare for a high-quality bean harvest by training Akhana Fujimame beans to climb a sturdy trellis. Most Oriental gardening books will list these as just Lablab Beans referring to the Latin name. After the harvest, leave the roots in the ground to decompose and release nitrogen into the soil for next year's crops.

Harvest young pods continually as they become ready. Gently clip off the pods at the base of the stem. It is possible to have a 3-month long harvest if the conditions are ideal.
Culinary Tips
Young pods can be sliced or used whole. Always cook hyacinth beans well before eating. Hyacinth beans naturally have a cyanide-like compound that is toxic to humans and animals but is neutralized by heating thoroughly.
To create a delicious Indian-inspired masala: Boil rinsed rice and hyacinth beans for 15 minutes with sauteed cumin, mustard seed, masala spice, coriander, cayenne, turmeric, and onions. Drain off extra liquid. Add in fresh grated coconut and cilantro after cooking.
