How to Grow Qing Bain Pole Beans
Sow seeds in the late spring or early summer after the last frost in a warm, sunny location. Optionally, apply a legume root inoculant for faster growth. The soil should be moist in the early days. However, cold, wet soil will cause the seeds to rot before germination. As the plants become established, allow the soil to dry lightly between deep waterings. If the plants look pale throughout the season, boost them with a low-nitrogen fertilizer.
Save space and prepare for a high-quality bean harvest by training Qing Bain beans to climb vertical supports that are at least 10ft tall. After the harvest, leave the roots in the ground to decompose and release nitrogen into the soil for next year's crops. See page 28 of our free vegetable growing guide for more tips!
Harvesting Qing Bain Pole Beans
Harvest the beans at 10-12" long when they start to bulge in their pods and are about 1" wide. Snap them off the vine and promptly consume or freeze for optimum flavor.
Culinary Tips
Toss the robust beans into Italian pasta dishes, stir-fries, or soups. They are incredibly delicious fresh, steamed, sauteed, or fried. Qing Bain pole beans freeze excellently for later consumption.
Tips From Our Gardeners
“These long, flat beans seem to strike the perfect balance between flavor, utility, and visual interest. Be sure not to let the soil get too cold, especially during germination, and these beans will not disappoint!”
