Growing Non-GMO Phlox 21st Century Mix Flower Seeds
Phlox drummondii does not require a cold treatment, but some sources suggest that it may improve germination rates. If desired, chill them in the fridge with a moist paper towel for 6 weeks, then 30 days at 65 degrees with light. Plant the seeds indoors 10-12 weeks prior to the frost. Phlox has a wildflower habit and may also be sown by broadcasting directly into the flower bed in spring after the last frost. Blend 21st Century Mix seeds with sand to increase visibility during sowing and broadcast mix over and evenly rake and lightly tamp into soil. Sow no later than January for first-year flowering in August. Sowing from April to July will result in next year's flowering. Thin seedlings to prevent overcrowding. Cut back spent flowers to encourage additional blooms, foliage, leaves, and more blooms.
Cut the plants back lightly at the end of May (after the first full year of growth) to create bushier and more compact plants. Fertilize each spring and summer. Once established, these plants are low-maintenance! Give extra water if the foliage wilts during a dry period. Trim back dead foliage throughout the season. Although 21st Century Mix phlox tolerates heat, it will not perform well in drought conditions or arid soil.
As noted, phlox seeds have hard seed coats that may delay germination for a year or more. To increase the germination rate in the first year, growers often stratify seeds. Stratification means exposing the seeds to cold weather to simulate natural weathering processes. Although Phlox is an annual, it has been known to self-seed and returns the following year.
