Growing Golden Greek Pepperoncini Peppers in the Vegetable Garden
To grow your Golden Greek Pepperoncini peppers, prepare your seed starting trays and plant the seeds. Start the process about 6-8 weeks before your last spring frost date. You can use well-draining soil or a seed starting mix like Minute Soil Coco Clair. Plant the seeds about 0.25 inches deep in the soil, and make sure you keep the soil moist, but don’t let it get waterlogged. You can check whether you need to water your plants by sticking your finger into the soil - if it feels dry, then give your plants some water, but make sure not to overwater. If the soil looks wet, then wait for it to dry out a bit before you water your plants next. Plant the seeds in this soil in a seed starting tray and keep it in a very warm area, somewhere around 80-90 F. You can use a grow light to keep this area warmer. The seedlings should emerge within 7-10 days. Once the plants are about 6-8 inches tall, you can start the process to harden them off by moving them to a cooler area, around 70 F, to prepare them for being outside! Choose a nice sunny location in your garden or in pots for your plants. Plant the rows about 2-3 feet apart, and plant individual plants about 12-18 inches apart. Dig a hole and make sure the roots are covered completely!
Keep a close eye on your peppers throughout the growing process to make sure they are healthy and growing correctly! You should be watering them consistently. The soil should be moist beneath the surface, but make sure not to overwater them. You can stick your finger in the soil to see how the moisture levels are beneath the surface. Try companion planting with crops like marigolds and basil. This can help keep pests away and attract pollinators to your garden. Don't forget to give your plants a little support with stakes or trellises to keep them standing tall as they start to grow fruit. You can add mulch around the base of your plants to help keep the soil moist and suppress weeds. To help your plants grow, you can try giving them fertilizer full of phosphorus and calcium. Be sure to follow the instructions on your fertilizer and not over-fertilize them. And keep an eye on your peppers - if you spot any pests or diseases, make sure to treat them immediately!
Harvesting Golden Greek Pepperoncini Peppers
You'll know your peppers are ready for harvest when they are about 4 inches long. They will be a bright red color. When you’re harvesting the peppers, use a pair of scissors or a knife to cut the peppers off the plant, leaving a small stem. Make sure you’re gentle and don’t damage the plant. They’ll be ready somewhere between 85-90 days after transplanting. These are sweet peppers, which means that you’ll want to harvest them when they’re ripe - if you harvest them early, they may be bitter. You can pick them when they’re green - they will be sweet with mild bitterness. Red peppers will be sweeter and have more heat. Most people pick them when they are a golden color.
About Golden Greek Pepperoncini Pepper Garden Seeds
These peppers have been around since about the 1600s, and probably originated in Italy when it was controlled by the Spanish. This is a Greek variety. Peppers came to Europe in the age of colonization from South America.
These peppers, also known as Greekoncinis, have a little bit of heat. They have about 100-500 Scoville Heat Units. They are traditionally pickled, and are also a great addition to Greek salads.
These plants can grow pretty tall, up to 4 feet! Therefore, it’s probably not a great idea to grow these in hanging baskets, as they will need some support, but they grow well in greenhouses, raised beds, or garden plots.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"Make sure you’re not growing hot and sweet peppers too close together, because they can cross-pollinate!"
