Growing Caribbean Yellow Habanero Peppers in the Vegetable Garden
First things first, grab your seed starting trays and get ready to plant the seeds about 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost hits your area. Plant the seeds in either a well-draining soil or in a seed starting mix like Minute Soil Coco Clair. The pH of the soil should be about 6.5. Plant those seeds about 0.25 inches deep into the soil and keep it nicely moist, but don't drown them! A handy trick is to stick your finger into the soil - if it feels dry, give the seeds a drink, but if it's wet, wait for a bit for the soil to dry out. Plant the seeds in this soil in a seed starting tray and keep it in a very warm area, somewhere around 80-90 F. You can use a grow light to keep this area warmer. The seedlings should emerge within 7-10 days. Once the plants are about 6-8 inches tall, you can start the process to harden them off by moving them to a cooler area, around 70 F, to prepare them for being outside! Choose a nice sunny location in your garden or in pots for your plants. Plant them 12-18 inches apart, and space your rows about 2-3 feet apart. Bury the roots completely in the soil. Be sure not to plant hot peppers and sweet peppers close together, as this can lead to cross-pollination!
Taking good care of your plants will ensure that you end up with a great harvest of peppers! Make sure to water them consistently. Sprinkling mulch around the base of the plant can help retain moisture and can also help with suppressing weeds. You can also try adding a fertilizer that is rich in phosphorus and calcium to provide essential nutrients to your peppers. Try companion planting with plants like marigolds and herbs like basil, which can help attract beneficial insects to the garden, as well as deterring pests. Don't forget to give your plants a little support with stakes or trellises to keep them standing tall as they start to grow fruit. Keep an eye out for pests or diseases and make sure to address them immediately if you see signs.
Harvesting Caribbean Yellow Habanero Peppers
These peppers are full size when they’ve grown about 2 inches long. They will be a bright yellow, and they should have a somewhat glossy sheen. They’ll be ripe about 110 days after transplanting, but because this is a hot variety, you can also harvest them before they’re fully ripe. When the peppers are at your preferred ripeness, you can harvest them with garden shears or a knife by cutting off the peppers, leaving a small stem on the pepper. Be sure to be gentle with the plant so you don’t damage the plant and it can keep producing fruit. Because this is a hot variety, make sure you wear gloves and wash your hands immediately after harvest. Also try to avoid leaving them on the plant for too long, because overripe peppers might be a little bit bitter. Store them in a cool and dry place.
