Growing Lakota in the Vegetable Garden
Sow seeds 1 inch deep in warm soil (60 F or higher) after the last frost. Space plants 8-12 ft apart, with rows 72 inches apart. Starting indoors 3-4 weeks prior to transplanting can extend the season.
Maintain consistent moisture and mulch to reduce weeds. Scout regularly for pests and treat early.
Harvesting Lakota Squash
Harvest fruits when their skin is hard and the color is deep orange, typically 80-120 days after planting. Cut fruit from the vine, leaving a 1-2 inch stem for storage longevity.

Stories From Our Gardeners
"My mom decided to try growing something new in her vegetable patch last year. She had heard about Lakota squash, a winter squash with a beautiful orange skin and a slightly ribbed shape. Mom planted the seeds in late spring, carefully watering and tending to them as the warm days rolled in. As the weeks passed, the vines spread across the soil, sending out large, green leaves and bright yellow flowers. Mom watched eagerly as small squashes began to form, slowly growing bigger and turning a deep orange. She learned that Lakota squash needs plenty of sunshine and rich soil to thrive, and it usually takes about 100 days to fully mature. By late September, Mom knew it was time to harvest. She carefully cut the squash from the vine, admiring its tough skin and sturdy stem. Lakota squash is a winter squash, meaning it can be stored for months in a cool, dry place, making it a great food to keep through the colder months. Mom loved how the flesh was sweet and smooth when cooked, perfect for soups, roasting, or even baking into pies. That year, Lakota squash became a favorite in her kitchen, reminding her of the satisfaction of growing something delicious from seed to harvest. She looked forward to planting it again next season, knowing it was both beautiful in the garden and tasty on her table."
