Growing Mammoth Dill in the Herb Garden
Sow Mammoth Dill seeds directly in the garden at a depth of 0.25 inches once soil temperatures reach around 60°F. Space plants 12-18 inches apart in rows 18-24 inches apart. Starting indoors is generally not recommended as dill transplants poorly.
Thin seedlings to allow ample airflow and avoid overcrowding. Provide full sun and well-drained soil with consistent moisture. Companion plant with cabbage, onions, and cucumbers, but avoid planting near carrots if saving seed. Remove flower heads to prolong leaf production.
Harvesting of Mammoth Dill
Leaves can be harvested as soon as the plant is about 8 inches tall by snipping leaf stems. Flower umbels can be harvested when fully open for seeds used in cooking or pickling. Harvest seeds once they turn brown and dry for best flavor.
Mammoth Dill's bright, aromatic leaves are perfect for seasoning fish, soups, and pickled vegetables in the kitchen. Its robust flavor enhances a wide range of dishes, making it a staple herb for fresh and dried use.
