Growing Organic Catnip
Growing catnip is quite straightforward: it is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 9, thrives in full sun, and can be planted outdoors in spring after the last frost, or in containers that are rotated between indoors and outdoors to ensure sufficient light.
Harvesting Organic Catnip
Harvest leaves and/or flowers as needed for medicinal use, or for drying for your cat.
Beyond being a favorite of many cats—about two-thirds of domestic cats are attracted to catnip’s active compound nepetalactone, which triggers playful and euphoric behaviors—catnip is also valued for its benefits and uses for humans. The leaves and flowering tops can be harvested to make herbal tea or tinctures. Catnip tea has a calming and mildly sedative effect that helps relieve anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia.
About Organic Catnip Garden Seeds
Native to dry temperate climates, Catnip will thrive in mild conditions, producing fragrant flowers that can be used in several applications or as an ornamental plant for your flower garden. Catnip has a reputation for reseeding itself easily. Shearing catnip back to its first set of leaves, after a flowering cycle, will encourage neater, more compact growth, less reseeding, and often another flowering cycle.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"Another practice to reduce the reseeding problem: grow catnip in a container that you place somewhere where dropped seeds cannot easily grow. Put the container on the sidewalk or patio, or move it around frequently on the lawn where you regularly mow. Any volunteer seedlings will not be able to get established."
