Growing Organic Fava Bean Sprout Seeds
The initial soak period for fava bean sprouts is 4-6 hours. Following the soak, seeds can be poured into the sprouting jar, bag, or tray. Fava beans are one of the easiest seeds to sprout, and only need to be rinsed 2-3 times per day for 2-3 days. Similar to garbanzo beans, fava sprouts will only develop a slight tail about 0.5 inches long during rinsing.
Fava is a very clean sprouting legume and does not excrete any unpleasant odors, colors, or mucus during sprouting. Watch for any yellowing of the sprout tail as a sign of maturity. This slight yellowing usually is most noticeable by day 3, meaning that the sprouts should be eaten soon. Harvest fava sprouts 2-3 days from the initial soaking or before the small sprout tail begins to mature and develop color. The exterior is soft and edible during the first 48 hours, becoming more fibrous and coarse around day 3.
We recommend using filtered water for the best sprouting results.
Benefits of Organic Fava Bean Sprouts
Fava beans are one of the easiest seeds to sprout! Consuming beans in the form of sprouts is a great nutritional choice, as they lose many nutrients and antioxidants when heated. Fava beans are made up of 28 percent protein and just 3 percent fat, and 100 grams of fava beans can provide you with over 60 percent of the recommended daily amount of fiber. They also contain high levels of Omega-6, Potassium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Calcium, Iron, Zinc, Vitamin A, B-Complex, and Vitamin C.
Culinary Tips
Fava bean sprouts can be eaten raw, unlike many sprouts. They add a creamy texture and sweet taste to salads, stir-fries, and noodle dishes!
Tips From Our Gardeners
"To help delay your sprouts from developing leaves, try covering your jar with a cloth to help block out light. This will help keep the beans in the root development stage rather than leaf formation."
